Membership Terms & Conditions

Welcome to Birds of a Feather! We're delighted to have you as part of our community of book lovers.

These Terms & Conditions explain how your membership works, including payments, renewals, cancellations and participation in our book club.

By purchasing a membership, you agree to these terms.

1. Your Membership

Birds of a Feather is an online book club operated by Books with Bec & Jane (Starseed Society Pty Ltd, ABN 29 652 187 687).

Your membership provides access to the benefits included in the membership option you purchase, as described on our website at the time of purchase.

Depending on your membership, benefits may include online book discussions, recorded author conversations, podcasts, reading notes, digital resources and live online events.

Books and book boxes are not included unless expressly specified in your selected membership or package. Separate terms may apply to book-box subscriptions and other optional purchases.

2. Membership Duration

Your annual membership is valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Your membership begins on the date of purchase and continues for 12 consecutive months, unless a different commencement date is expressly stated at checkout.

For memberships purchased with an advertised future start date, your 12-month membership begins on that specified date.

You will have access to your membership benefits throughout your paid membership period.

3. Automatic Renewals

Annual memberships purchased with automatic renewal enabled will renew every 12 months.

Your nominated payment method will be charged the applicable renewal fee on your renewal date unless you cancel automatic renewal beforehand.

Your renewal date is based on your membership commencement date, not the calendar year.

Memberships purchased as one-off products, including gift memberships, will not automatically renew.

Any changes to renewal pricing will be communicated before your next renewal, and you may cancel automatic renewal before that payment is due.

4. Cancelling Your Membership

You can cancel automatic renewal at any time before your next renewal date.

There are no cancellation fees.

To cancel, visit our secure membership payment portal or contact us at hello@birdsofafeather.com.au.

Cancelling automatic renewal prevents any further annual renewal charges. It does not immediately end your membership.

You will continue to enjoy access to your membership benefits until the end of your current paid 12-month membership period.

If you cancel and later wish to rejoin, you are welcome to purchase a new membership at the price and on the terms available at that time.

5. Fees and Refunds

Membership fees are charged at the time of purchase, or in accordance with any payment plan offered at checkout.

Where a payment plan is offered, all scheduled instalments remain payable for the membership purchased, even if you cancel automatic renewal, subject to your rights under applicable law.

We do not ordinarily provide refunds for change of mind, unused membership time or failure to participate in membership activities.

However, nothing in these terms excludes or limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Where you are entitled to a refund or other remedy under Australian Consumer Law, those rights will be honoured.

6. Membership Access and Content

Your membership provides personal access to the online content, resources and events associated with your selected membership.

Membership content is for your personal, non-commercial use only and must not be copied, distributed, shared or reproduced without our written permission.

You are responsible for keeping your login details secure and must not share your membership account with others.

Access to membership materials, recordings and member-only platforms ends when your paid membership expires.

We may make reasonable changes to book selections, event schedules, platforms and content throughout the year. If we need to make a significant change to a key membership benefit, we will communicate this to members and provide any remedy required by law.

7. Community Guidelines

Birds of a Feather is a welcoming community built around a shared love of books.

By participating, you agree to treat fellow members, guests and our team with kindness and respect.

Bullying, harassment, discrimination, threatening behaviour and inappropriate or disruptive conduct will not be tolerated.

We reserve the right to moderate discussions, remove inappropriate content or suspend or terminate access where reasonably necessary to protect our community or address a serious breach of these terms.

Any suspension or termination will be handled fairly and consistently with applicable consumer laws.

8. Adult Content and Participation

Birds of a Feather is a book club intended for adults aged 18 and over.

Our selected books and discussions may explore mature or confronting themes, including sexuality, violence, grief, trauma and other adult subject matter. Discussions may also include explicit language.

We do not routinely provide individual content or trigger warnings. Members are encouraged to make their own informed reading choices, and participation in discussions is always optional.

Our book club is not a counselling, therapeutic or mental health service.

9. Online Events and Recordings

Some membership activities take place through Zoom or other online platforms.

Our online discussions and events may be recorded and made available to members as videos, audio recordings or private podcasts.

By participating in a recorded event, you acknowledge that your contributions may be included in recordings made available to members. You may choose to keep your camera and microphone switched off.

We will seek separate permission before using identifiable member contributions, images or recordings for external promotional purposes.

We may occasionally need to reschedule or replace an event due to circumstances outside our reasonable control. Where possible, we will notify affected members.

10. Unofficial Groups and Meetups

Members may independently organise local gatherings, Facebook groups or other social activities.

Unless expressly identified as an official Birds of a Feather event or community, these activities are independently organised and are not managed, supervised or endorsed by us.

Members participate in unofficial groups and gatherings at their own discretion and are responsible for making appropriate arrangements for their own safety.

Nothing in this section excludes any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

11. Privacy and Communications

We collect and use personal information to administer your membership, process payments and communicate important membership information.

We handle personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Membership-related communications may include account notifications, event updates, renewal reminders and important changes to your membership.

You can unsubscribe from optional marketing communications at any time.

12. Waitlist Terms

From time to time, Birds of a Feather may offer waitlists for memberships, events, book boxes or other experiences.

Joining a waitlist is free, does not guarantee availability and does not commit you to making a purchase.

By joining a waitlist, you agree to receive emails from Birds of a Feather about the relevant membership or offer, including updates, availability, pricing, launch announcements and opportunities to purchase. You may also choose to receive our general newsletters, book recommendations and special offers.

Prices and availability are subject to change and will be confirmed at the time of purchase.

You can unsubscribe or remove yourself from a waitlist at any time using the link in our emails or by contacting hello@birdsofafeather.com.au.

Joining a waitlist does not commence a membership or its 12-month term. Any membership purchased will be subject to our Membership Terms & Conditions and applicable Australian consumer laws.

Your personal information will be handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable privacy and spam laws.

13. Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time to reflect changes to our services, operations or legal obligations.

If we make a material change affecting an existing membership, we will provide reasonable notice. Any changes will be subject to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

14. Australian Consumer Law

Our memberships come with consumer guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law.

Nothing in these Terms & Conditions limits or excludes any rights or remedies available to you under applicable law.

These terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia, subject to any applicable consumer protections.
